La Máquina de pintar nubes
La Máquina de pintar nubes
(The Cloud Painting Machine)
Directed by Aitor Mazo & Patxo Tellería
Spain, 2009
Cornerhouse, 5 March 2011
This very beautiful film recounts the awakening of an artist.
It remains a gentle comedy, even though love, death, truth and heartbreak are all present. There is a lot of substance and telling detail to every scene; it is a comedy of contexts and particularities.
The conceit of making many of Asier’s key perceptions morph into paintings works extremely well. Their significance becomes apparent as the film progresses.
Bingen Elorza, the young actor who plays Asier, was wonderful but the actor who impressed most of all was Aitor Mazo, who took the part of Asier’s father. As well as being the co-director, he is an actor who can convey telling emotion through even a slight movement of his eyes.
Michaelangelo’s finger must surely have blessed this film, which is showing again on 12 and 15 March. Details here.
