Cabaret Whore
Written and performed by Sarah-Louise Young
Music by Michael Roulston
The Lowry, 26 June 2011

The word ‘Whore’ is a bit too strong to my mind, though it must be conceded that Miss Young’s affections and talents are spread far and wide, between six different characters to be exact.

She has created six personas, all cabaret acts with their own distinct personalities and songs to match, and each of them does a set.  One is a Christian evangelist, one a Broadway (well, off-off- Broadway) belt ‘em outer; another an East European ukulele player.  And the star turn is a French chanteuse with a bad case of Piaf envy.

It was splendidly entertaining, this show, and sometimes skirted quite close to the knuckle; or behind the palm, at any rate.  It’s next showing at the Southbank on 10 July.  Details here.
