By Amadou and Mariam
New Century Hall, 14 July 2011
It is quite a unique experience to listen to a concert in complete darkness.
This is what we, the audience, did last night until the very last song, when sun and moon parted, as it were. The darkness made the music richer, clearly, but it also placed a distance between audience and performers. On balance, it was a double-edged contrivance, an interesting experiment.
As for the songs, they were pretty much the couple’s greatest hits, full of infectious rhythms and joyous riffs, and were performed with flair and feeling. We followed the path of Amadou and Mariam’s relationship, traced the trajectory of their career.
Amadou and Mariam are at the New Century Hall until 16 July.
