An Evening with Janis Ian
The Lowry, 3 November 2011
Let me urge you to go and see this wonderful artist.
Janis Ian is still at the very top of her game, that much is clear. She sang a slew of sublime songs, and the odd humorous ditty too. The one about her erstwhile marriage was hilarious. Her banter between each song was always engaging, sometimes self-deprecatory (the vanity is a put-on), and often moving.
What is overlooked by many is her musicianship: the lady plays a mean guitar. Most applause greeted the opening chords of ‘At Seventeen’ but it was the performance of ‘Jesse’, one of two songs sung during the encore, which really took your breath away. It was a blessed privilege to be there.
This was pretty much a perfect concert, pushing all the right prams, to coin an expression. You’ll be cooing like a baby, having seen and heard her.
Janis Ian is currently touring the UK, tour dates are here.
