Lore is a good German girl, raised to regard her Fuhrer as a wise shepherd and the Jews as wolves in sheep’s clothing.
The true facts emerge only with the country’s collapse, which is also when Lore (she is the eldest daughter) takes her brothers and sister to the road, in search of food and safety. It’s a troubled journey for the young woman, and that in several respects. Her world is shattered forever; in fact, it was always false. That realisation is, of course, no bad thing.
This film features a fine lead performance by Saskia Rosendahl, with the final few moments being particularly powerful. Although Mehr Licht gets the majority vote, Goethe’s last words may well have been Mehr Nicht (No more). Let us hope so.
