RNCM Day of Song: Fin de Siecle
Royal Exchange Theatre, 27 April 2014
Just was able to catch the closing concert of the RNCM Day of Song, this year’s festival being on the theme of the Fin de Siecle.
Xysts in a palatial garden; songs from the end of the nineteenth century and shortly thereafter. A lot to enjoy: the melancholy sweetness of Faure’s En sourdine; Satie’s Je te veux, for its melody above all; a selection of songs, in the language his father spoke, from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn. In the latter half there were songs by Richard Strauss, Elgar’s sublime Sea Pictures (in full) and arias by Tosti and Puccini.
The songs may have come from various countries around the globe but the performances were uniformly excellent. All in all, a fine fin de dimanche.
