Music & Libretto by Tim Benjamin
RNCM Theatre, 25 September 2014
I very much enjoyed Tim Benjamin’s atmospheric opera, which combined elements of Baroque, Jacobin drama and Grand Guignol.
It brought to mind also Weinberg’s The Portrait and at the end, without wishing to give too much away, Ruddigore: all good things. Although this was the last performance of its current modest run, it would be wonderful to see the opera again in a full-bodied production in the future.
Laura Sheerin and Tom Morss, both RNCM alumni, impressed in the lead roles of Zerlina and Masetto; and Taylor Wilson as Lady Brannoch caught the eye as well. Of Morss’s fine aria in the second half, suffice to say that it earned him a well-deserved ovation.
There’s a trailer of Madame X on the website, which can be viewed here.
