Music by David Lang
RNCM Concert Hall, 20 October 2015
The evening began with a performance of Bach’s motet, Jesu Meine Freude.
After a short interval, four of the five singers then took the stage for David Lang’s musical setting of Hans Christian Anderson’s haunting tale. She lived a precarious life, this young woman, and found no solace in the world.
The juxtaposition worked very well, with each work refracting back upon the other like sunlight reflecting off snow. Luminous space.
The singing was sublime throughout and as for The Little Match Girl Passion, it had a solemn, unhurried pace. It felt like a mass.
A spare and elegant and moving production, further details here.
