Kana Ohashi and Martin Klett
Carole Nash Recital Room, RNCM
18 February 2016
This fine concert featured high-quality performances of works by Bach, Mozart and Prokofiev.
What stood out for me, however, was the performance of Bottesini’s Gran Duo Concertante, which was where Kana Ohashi on violin and Martin Klett on piano were joined by Toby Hughes on double bass. (Hughes played also in the Halle at their recent Echoes of a Mountain Song concert, so he is a musician who is much in demand.)
At a certain point Bottesini’s piece possessed a jaunty motion, almost like a klezmer tune, which it kept right up until the end. There was a fragile quality too but that did not interfere with the forward propulsion: it just kept on going. And come to think of it, all the works chosen here had a fragile, intricate quality, not least Chausson’s Poeme, which brought the concert to a close.
A delightful concert.
