Young Philby

A decent enough film featuring some strong individual performances, only just not the visionary masterpiece you might have been led to expect.

Moonlight tells the story of a boy then a young man’s coming of age, for the most part involveng an acceptance that he is gay, in inner city America; and it is a romance, a love story, as well. If you transpose Weekend, Andrew Haigh’s film of 2011, to the world of The Wire then you get Moonlight.

There are a few false notes, my guess being that the filmmakers’ eye was more on their probable audience’s expectations than on the realities of the world depicted in the film. But these are minor, you can likely let them slide.

Anyway, well worth a watch.
