AMICI DELLA MUSICA FIRENZE
Teatro della Pergola Saloncino, 26 November 2017
This was one of two wonderful concerts which we attended on a recent trip to Florence.
The first one took place on the afternoon of 25 November, around about 4pm. Quartetto Prometeo played works by Sciarrino, the great contemporary Italian classical composer, Mendelssohn and, following a brief interval, Ravel. All performances delivered the family goods, in particular the Ravel, which was his Quartet in F major.
On the following evening, rather later than is usual for England – it all kicked off about 9pm this time – Quatuor Ebene did the honours. There was a nocturnal theme to this concert, which was suitably entitled Round Midnight, and we heard performances of works by Sciarrino (this time out it was his Ai limiti della notte), Dutilleux and Schonberg. In addition, the quartet performed Night Bridge, their own composition or arrangement, which quoted from a number of jazz classics, notably the concert title. I suppose this one would be best described as a medley or collage. Schonberg’s Verklärte Nacht was the outstanding performance here.
AMICI DELLA MUSICA FIRENZE looks like an extraordinary organisation, having been begun in by chamber music enthusiasts a century or so ago, after the First World War (a short history is here). Besides concerts, they also run masterclasses, festivals and educational projects. Their concerts very much reminded me of the ones run by the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society and, looking through their programme, you see many of the same world class musicians who are familiar to MCCS regulars (the likes of Avi Avital, Isabelle Faust, Paul Lewis, etc.). It seems like something of a home away from home.
As for the concert venue, the Teatro della Pergola, it is smack bang in the centre of Florence, a few streets away from Duomo. The via della Pergola is a narrow street, parallel with the Borgo Pinti, and from the outside you don’t suspect how spacious and salubrious the theatre is once you open up the doors and go inside.
If you are planning a trip to Florence and enjoy listening to chamber music in an intimate setting, you should definitely check out what AMICI DELLA MUSICA FIRENZE have to offer.
